Goodbye aid money? NEW PALTZ SCHOOLS PLAN FOR STATE EDUCATION CUTS

New Paltz Schools are planning for cuts:

Board of Education members asked the superintendent to look at ways to reduce spending without cutting anything from education programming or laying off staff members. The superintendent said that she’s already been meeting with her advisors, the unions and the principals.”

Potentially, one future strategy to make up for lost state aid might be to just raise the tax levy to pay for it. However, the school board did not want to follow that route. The Board of Education was worried that too much of an increase in local taxes would cause people to simply vote against the school budget.”

The board also wanted Rice to draft next year’s budget at or below the “contingency level.” If voters reject a school budget twice, the schools must revert to a contingency spending plan formulated by state law.”
