School jobs going, tax hike coming in Kingston district

The second draft of the $141.7 million Kingston school district budget for 2009-10 eliminates 45 jobs, including 26 teaching positions, according to Superintendent Gerard Gretzinger.

And Board of Education President David Fletcher on Wednesday calculated the property tax levy under the draft budget would increase by 9.9 percent, based on current state funding proposals and excluding the receipt of federal stimulus money. The tax increase would be in spite of the proposed job cuts and a budget-to-budget spending increase of 3.7 percent, which is below the austerity level of 4 percent.
